How to Choose the Right Plan for Your Family
1. Prioritise Claim Settlement Ratio
The claim settlement ratio (CSR) tells you how many claims an insurer paid out of total claims received. New India Assurance leads at 98.9%, followed by Bajaj Allianz at 96.8%. A higher CSR means fewer claim rejections — the most important metric when buying health insurance.
2. Check Network Hospitals in Your City
Care Health has the largest network at 19,000+ hospitals, followed by Bajaj Allianz at 18,000+. However, what matters most is whether your preferred hospital is in the network — always check the insurer's hospital locator for your specific city before buying.
3. Understand Room Rent Limits
Plans like Tata AIG Medicare Premier and New India Floater Mediclaim cap you to a Single AC room. If you choose a higher category room, the entire claim gets proportionally reduced — including doctor fees and ICU charges. Plans with "any room category" give you full flexibility.
4. No Claim Bonus (NCB) Matters Long-Term
Niva Bupa Reassure 2.0 offers the highest NCB at 150% — meaning your ₹10L cover can grow to ₹25L over 5 claim-free years. HDFC Ergo Optima Restore uses a different approach — 100% sum restoration after a claim rather than annual accumulation.
5. Pre-Existing Disease Waiting Period
Most plans have a 3-year waiting period for pre-existing conditions. Star Health and New India Assurance have a 4-year wait. If you have a pre-existing condition, buy insurance early — the clock starts ticking from day one.
