How to Port Your Health Insurance Without Losing Benefits
February 2026 · 6 min read · By Policy Aid
Not happy with your current health insurer? IRDAI's portability rules allow you to switch — and take your benefits with you. Here's how to do it right.
What Benefits Can You Port?
- Accrued No-Claim Bonus (NCB)
- Waiting period credits for pre-existing diseases
- Waiting period credits for specific illnesses
Step-by-Step Porting Process
- Contact Policy Aid at least 45 days before your renewal date
- We compare your current plan with better alternatives across 22+ insurers
- Submit porting request to the new insurer with your existing policy details
- New insurer verifies your history and offers a quote within 15 days
- Accept the offer and pay the new premium — portability is complete!
⚠️ You cannot port if your current policy has lapsed. The new insurer can also reject your application if you have more than 2 major claims in the past 3 years. Always initiate porting at least 45 days before renewal.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Waiting too close to renewal date (less than 45 days)
- Not disclosing existing medical conditions honestly
- Choosing a new plan only on premium — check claim settlement ratio first
- Letting the old policy lapse before new one is confirmed
When porting, also review the new plan's health insurance exclusion clauses carefully — some exclusions carry over while others reset.
